Zanzibar Travel Guide: Beaches, Culture and Island Life

Everything you need to know about visiting Zanzibar — from the best beaches to cultural experiences.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. It consists of two main islands — Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar) and Pemba — plus numerous smaller islets.

Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a maze of narrow streets, historic buildings, and carved doors. Don't miss the night market at Forodhani Gardens.

The best beaches: Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have the best swimming conditions as they're not affected by tides. The east coast beaches (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe) are beautiful but affected by low tide.

Top activities: snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll, diving at the northern reefs, a spice farm tour, a sunset dhow cruise, and a visit to Prison Island to see giant tortoises.

Zanzibar is a Muslim society. Please dress modestly in Stone Town and villages. Beachwear is fine at resorts.
