Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Ancient baobabs and massive elephant herds in Tanzania's hidden gem.

Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. During the dry season, the Tarangire River is the only permanent water source in the area, drawing wildlife from miles around.

Tarangire is defined by its river and its baobabs. In the dry season the Tarangire River is the only permanent water for miles, drawing some of the largest elephant concentrations in northern Tanzania.

The park also holds lions, leopards, large buffalo herds, fringe-eared oryx and over 500 bird species. The southern Silale swamps and the remote Kuro area see far fewer vehicles.

Seasons in Tarangire

June – October

Peak dry season

Huge elephant herds along the river; the best time to visit.

November – May

Green season

Animals disperse; excellent birding and fewer visitors.

Typical patterns. Wildlife movements follow the rains and vary from year to year.
