What to Expect on a Tanzania Safari

October 5, 2025 7 min readBy Wild Host Team

First time on safari? Here's everything you need to know about daily routines, game drives, and life in the bush.

A typical safari day starts early. You'll wake before dawn, grab a quick coffee, and head out for a morning game drive when animals are most active.

Morning game drives last 3-4 hours. You'll return to the lodge for a full breakfast (or enjoy a bush breakfast). The middle of the day is hot and animals are less active, so this is a good time to relax, swim, or enjoy lunch.

Afternoon game drives start around 3:30 PM and last until sunset. This is a magical time as the light softens and predators become active again.

Your safari vehicle is a 4x4 with a pop-up roof, giving you 360-degree views. Everyone gets a window seat. Your guide is in radio contact with other guides to share wildlife sightings.

Meals at lodges are usually buffet-style with a mix of international and local dishes. Vegetarian options are always available. Water is provided in the vehicle.

Evenings are for sundowners, dinner, and swapping stories around the campfire. Most lodges have a bar and lounge area. You'll sleep early — tomorrow is another early start!
