Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhino — here's where to find each of the Big Five in Tanzania's national parks.
The term "Big Five" was coined by hunters to describe the five most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Today, spotting all five is the goal of many safari-goers.
Lions are found throughout the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire. The Serengeti's Seronera valley is known for its large prides, while Ngorongoro Crater has one of the highest lion densities in Africa.
Leopards are the most elusive of the Big Five. Look for them in the trees of the Seronera valley in the Serengeti, and along the riverine forests of Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
Elephants are abundant in Tarangire National Park, which has one of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania. You'll also see large herds in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Buffalo are common across the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. They're often found in large herds and can be aggressive, so always keep your distance.
Black Rhinos are the rarest of the Big Five. The Ngorongoro Crater is the best place in Tanzania to see them, with a small but well-protected population. The Serengeti also has rhinos, but sightings are rare.
