Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi

Respectful cultural encounters with the Hadzabe and Datoga.

A seasonal soda lake south-west of the Ngorongoro highlands, home to the Hadzabe — one of Africa's last hunter-gatherer communities — and Datoga pastoralists.

We arrange Hadzabe visits through local interpreters with fees paid to the community. Visits start before dawn and involve walking in the bush.

We ask guests to treat the experience as a meeting, not a show: ask before photographing and follow your guide's lead.

Questions about Eyasi

Is visiting the Hadzabe ethical?

It can be when visits are small, arranged with the community, fairly paid and respectful. That is how we arrange them, and we keep groups small.
