Climbing Kilimanjaro requires careful packing. Here's our complete list of what to bring for a successful summit.
Packing for Kilimanjaro is all about layers. You'll trek through five climate zones, from tropical rainforest to arctic summit. The key is being prepared for every temperature.
Base layers: Moisture-wicking tops and bottoms. Merino wool is ideal as it doesn't retain odor.
Mid layers: A fleece jacket and insulated pants for warmth.
Outer layers: A waterproof, windproof shell jacket and pants. Essential for summit night.
Summit night: A down jacket rated to -20°C, warm gloves, a warm hat, and a balaclava. Summit night is the coldest part of the climb.
Footwear: Broken-in waterproof hiking boots and comfortable camp shoes. Good socks are essential — bring 4-5 pairs.
Sleeping: A sleeping bag rated to -15°C and a sleeping pad. These can be rented if you don't want to travel with them.
Accessories: Headlamp with extra batteries, trekking poles, sunscreen, lip balm, water bottles (3 liters capacity), and a basic first aid kit.
